Matcon (Modified Asphalt Technology for Waste Containment) for Environmental Capping and Containment

I worked on a landfill site years ago where the cap was constantly sinking and generally moving around and needed to be surcharged every other year. We figured out how to cost effectively construct the building slab on piles but, believe it or not, one of the biggest problems was figuring out how to light the parking lot. Running underground power through the capped landfill was an issue and finding a way to keep light standards standing plumb was difficult. I have to wonder whether Matcon would have been the answer, at least partially, to our problems.

This asphalt solution by Wilder Construction would appear to be a huge improvement over some other methods used for environmental capping and containment. According to the Matcon web site, you can expect the following:

no cracking

no or low maintenance

low danger of damage during construction

ability to be visually inspected at anytime (i.e., it’s not a buried solution)

water infiltration monitoring

resists erosion
